Founder & Managing Partner
Gary is a Founder and Managing Partner of Vanbarton Group. He has been involved in all of the Firm’s investments and activities since its inception in 1992. Gary played a key role in the Firm’s early acquisitions of complex distressed debt portfolios and equity positions, enabling the Firm to acquire interests in over 300 properties during its first decade of operations. He also played a key role in initiating the Firm’s East Coast lending platform, later expanding Vanbarton’s credit investment and origination activities to include new product lines and an extended geographic footprint beyond the East Coast to gateway markets across the U.S.
Gary has diverse expertise in all areas of commercial real estate, particularly in structured finance, distressed transactions, creative joint venture and inter-creditor arrangements, real estate related workouts, and restructurings. He serves a leading role in developing the Firm’s investment strategy, as well as sourcing and structuring acquisition and credit-related opportunities, and developing and maintaining new and existing client and capital partner relationships.
Gary is a member of Vanbarton Group’s Management Committee, Investment Committee, Portfolio Strategy and Valuations Committee, and the Investment Strategy Committee. Gary is an active Member of the Real Estate Roundtable, the Partnership for New York City, and Pension Real Estate Association. He holds a B.S. in political science from Binghamton University and a J.D. from the Boston University School of Law, where he was a member of the American Journal of Law and Medicine.
